What are the Best Running Shoes for Beach Running?

Couple-Running

If you’re on the search to find the best running shoes for the beach know that as of 2023 (as this article is being written) there isn’t a:

Specific type or company that makes shoes that are designed for running on the beach sand.

That’s not to say that one won’t exist in the future, but that then doesn’t help answer the question of,

So, if there’s no specific beach running shoe then what shoes should I wear for beach running?”

Well, in our opinion there’s no real right or wrong answer here.

What it really comes down to is considering a few things first to help you find you’re somewhat close-to-beach running shoes to take to the beach.

6 Tips to Consider When Buying Your Beach Running Shoes

shoe-on-pavement

When looking for beach running shoes, it’s important to keep a few things in mind.

Here are 6 tips to help you find your perfect pair of beach running shoes:

1. What Type of Terrain do you Plan to Run on

First off, some questions to ask here are do you prefer running through beach trails, pavements that lead to the beach, or running on the beach sand itself?

Each one of these will have different types of shoes that work best so it’s important to consider where you’ll be doing most of your running.

beach running terrain

For example:

If you plan on doing a lot of beach trail running, then a cross-trainer with a good grip would work best for you.

This will give you stability amongst uneven surfaces.

On the other hand, beach running shoes that have a really good grip may not be ideal if your plan is to run on pavements.

Since it might make it difficult to walk in them off-road.

We recommend going for light-trail running shoes.

light-trail-running-shoes-inforgraphic

The reason is that light-trail running shoes have many benefits to use as beach running shoes.

First off, they are built with an enhanced grip that offers great stability.

Can be used in different types of terrain (pavements, mud, sand, or beach hiking trails) making them versatile.

They also tend to be lightweight – which won’t weigh down your feet while moving across the ground.

Also, they can be water-proof, helping repel the water from entering your shoe and they are built to be used over time.

Which makes it a great investment instead of running in water shoes.

Water shoes are great for draining water out from feet quickly, but they lack the durability for beach running over long distances.

They aren’t made to be running shoes.

2. Weight of the Shoe is Important

person-holding-shoes

Shoes come in all different shapes and sizes.

When looking for beach running shoes definitely factor in the weight of the shoe.

If you’re looking for speed on the beach then having a shoe that is lightweight and breathable will help you conquer your beach workout.

The reason is running on the beach can be hot and humid.

So being able to run with a lightweight shoe will prevent your feet from getting too heavy or sweaty.

Especially, if you plan on running during summertime.

Whereas, if you’re looking for something more heavy-duty and with stability then a shoe that is heavier may be better.

Keep in mind though that the heavier shoes will slow you down if you plan on running on beach sand.

It really does depend on what your beach running goals are.

3. How Often do you Plan to Run on the Beach?

walking-in-steps

Another thing you should take into consideration when looking for beach running shoes is how often you plan to run on the beach.

If this is your first-time beach running and not really sure if it’s something you’ll enjoy then it’s recommendable going for less expensive shoes.

As beach running can be tough on the feet and joints, you don’t want to invest in top-of-the-line beach running shoes if this is only something you’ll do once or twice.

On the other hand, if beach running is your go-to workout then it would be worth investing in a more expensive beach running shoe that will provide you with more comfort and durability.

It really depends on how often you’ll be using them.

Shoe-Features

4. What Features are Important to you

When looking for beach running shoes, it’s important to think about what features are important to you.

Do you need a beach running shoe that has a lot of cushioning?

Do you need a beach running shoe that is waterproof?

What about a beach running shoe with a good grip?

Make a list of the features you’re looking for and take that list with you when shopping for beach running shoes.

5. How Much are you Willing to Spend

If you’re looking for shoes to take to the beach consider the cost.

Well-made shoes built with quality materials will most likely be more expensive than those that cost less.

Again, it depends on what you’re looking for and what your beach running goals are.

6. Get expert Help And Try Before you Buy

Online has made it so convenient to do online shopping.

However, I strongly advocate if possible to go to a retail store and try on a few pairs of shoes and ask questions.

Finding your unique beach running shoes will require you to put them on firsthand.

You can walk around the store, and test different shoes from different brands.

Getting that fit off the shoe to finding what feels best on your feet.

Everyone’s preference is different so don’t just go off what might work for others.

What works great for one, might not be so good for you!

And perhaps you might have some questions and the employees there can help answer them.

Pointing you in the right direction to finding your unique beach running shoes.

So, yes, you can try the shoes at a retail store first before buying to get a better feel and fit.

How to Keep Sand Out of Running Shoes

people-in-running-shoes

Nothing is more annoying than having sand rub against your feet as you run on the beach.

Not to mention, sand can get into your running shoes and cause discomfort while you’re running.

There are a few ways to lessen the sand from entering your beach running shoes.

For instance, if you enjoy running on the beach try to run in areas where the sand is more packed.

Like running near the water’s edge where the sand is firmer.

Firmer beach sand will less the sand entering your shoes.

If you do find yourself running on loose sand, try to run in short strides.

This way, your feet will land directly beneath your center of gravity and won’t sink as much.

Also, try to avoid running in the same place over and over again as this will create a trench where sand can easily accumulate.

If possible, wear socks when running on the beach.

The reason why is socks can help create a barrier between your feet and the sand.

Gives you an extra layer of protection amongst the sand.

If you happen to get wet sand in your shoes, make sure to empty it out before continuing your run.

The reason is wet sand can cause blisters.

Lastly, bring a towel with you and wipe down your feet and beach running shoes after your run.

This will help get rid of any excess sand.

F.A.Q.s

Should I get Beach Running Shoes or go Barefoot?

This is an often question that gets asked when it comes to beach running.

In order to answer this consider first consider the type of beach, you’ll be running in:

type-of-beach-running-in

As you can tell rocky shorelines will definitely require you to wear beach running shoes to help keep your feet protected amongst glass or rocks.

The last thing you want to do is step on anything that will cause injury.

In contrast, if the beach you are in running in features smooth, pristine sand then it’s perfectly fine to run barefooted if that’s your preference.

Remember though, running barefoot in the sand requires more engagement of your feet muscles for you won’t have that outsole support that usually comes with running shoes.

That’s not to say it’s a bad thing, but to some people having that support cushion under the feet is a must, while others opt for a more minimalist approach.

It really comes down to your call.

Can you run on the beach with sneakers?

Yes, you can run on the beach with sneakers, but consider the type of environment you plan on running in first!

As previously mentioned in 6 Tips to Consider When Buying Your Beach Running Shoes if you plan on running on the beach shoreline sneakers won’t provide as much grip or protection as shoes that are light-trail running.

Beach shorelines can carry uneven surfaces and the last thing you want to avoid is slipping causing injury.

On the other hand, if you are the type of runner that prefers running along beach trails or boardwalks.

Then sneakers could potentially be used since your type of environment won’t require much foot grip.

What to wear on Your feet when running on the beach?

When running on the beach such as the beach shorelines wearing socks on your feet can help protect your feet from the sand and sunburn.

It adds an extra layer of protection to the feet.

lady-running-in-beach

What shoes are good for running on the beach?

There is no one perfect answer when it comes to picking the best shoes for running on the beach.

As previously mentioned, a lot comes down to personal preference.

It really depends on what your running objectives are, your terrain conditions, etc.

However, we recommend getting shoes that are light-trail running for running on the beach, or on hiking trails.

We have compiled a list of some great shoes we would classify as beach running shoes that may help you make a decision!

Can beach running shoes also be used for other outdoor activities like trail running or water sports?

Beach running shoes are primarily designed for running on sandy or wet surfaces, but their versatility extends beyond just beach running.

Many beach running shoes can also be suitable for trail running due to their traction and durability.

However, it is essential to consider the specific requirements of trail running, such as stability and protection.

As for water sports, while beach running shoes may offer some water resistance, they may not provide the same level of performance and specialized features as dedicated water sports shoes.

It’s advisable to choose footwear specifically designed for each activity to ensure optimal comfort and performance.
