Cocoa Beach might not be the first name that comes to mind when you think of Florida’s beach destinations, especially if you’re not from the Orlando area.

I must admit, I didn’t know much about it myself initially.

We put together 15 things worth doing here for those who are visiting and on a budget.

15 Attractions & Things to do in Cocoa Beach

Growing up, my parents were budget-conscious, so our family vacations often revolved around the beach.

So, we get it travel can get expensive, but it shouldn’t deter you away from taking the chance and exploring new horizons.

So, while exploring Cocoa Beach these were the top things we recommend doing for those who are traveling here, but on a budget:

1. Spend a Day at the Beach

A No-Brainer: Spend a Day at the Beach!

Cocoa Beach is famous for its stunning beaches, providing the perfect setting for a relaxing day by the ocean.

Start by packing a picnic with your favorite snacks and drinks to enjoy a leisurely meal on the sand.

Growing up in San Diego, my mother would make irresistible sandwiches, with layers of fresh ingredients between soft bread.

The crisp, golden chips complemented our beachside feasts perfectly.

Our favorite spot was Oceanside Beach, where the rhythmic crash of waves provided a soothing backdrop.

We’d spread out a blanket, savor each bite, and let the salty breeze carry away our worries.

Those simple picnics, filled with laughter and love, created cherished memories that linger in the taste of those sandwiches and the sound of the sea.

Bring a towel or a blanket for comfortable sunbathing, and don’t forget the sunscreen to protect your skin.

Dive into the warm, clear waters of Cocoa Beach for a swim, or try bodysurfing for some added fun.

2. Check out the Cocoa Beach Pier

If you’re on a budget, I still recommend visiting the Cocoa Beach Pier.

There’s a restaurant and a shop on the pier that you can explore for free.

However, if you want to stroll further along the pier, there is a fee.

At the end of the pier, you’ll find the Rikki Tiki Tavern.

3. Play Beach Volleyball

If you’re on a budget but looking for some exercise while visiting, be sure to play beach volleyball.

Cocoa Beach offers volleyball nets that are free of charge.

However, it’s first come, first served, as I noticed while visiting with my sister.

The courts are typically well-maintained and provide a fantastic opportunity for both beginners and seasoned players to enjoy a friendly match under the sun.

It’s a great way to socialize, meet new people, or bond with friends and family while getting some exercise.

The soft sand adds an extra challenge to the game, making it a fun and unique way to stay active.

Don’t worry if you’re not an expert; beach volleyball is all about having a good time and enjoying the beach atmosphere.

So, grab a ball, gather a group, and serve up some fun in the sun!

4. Explore Lori Wilson Park

For those seeking affordable options Lori Wilson Park is worth a visit.

This free public park is a hidden gem in Cocoa Beach, offering not only beach access but also a variety of other amenities.

Wander through the nature trails and immerse yourself in the local flora and fauna.

It’s a peaceful way to connect with nature and get some exercise.

The park also features a well-equipped playground, making it a great spot for families with children to enjoy a fun-filled day.

5. Go Surfing

Another wallet-friendly option in Cocoa Beach is to go surfing.

Known as the East Coast Surfing Capital, Cocoa Beach offers waves suitable for both beginners and experienced surfers.

You can rent a surfboard from a local surf shop at a reasonable price or bring your own if you have one.

Many shops also offer affordable surf lessons if you’re new to the sport.

Surfing in Cocoa Beach is not only a cost-effective way to have fun but also a fantastic opportunity to connect with the ocean and experience the thrill of catching a wave.

6. Attend a Free Community Event

Cocoa Beach and its surrounding areas are vibrant communities that often host a variety of free events, making it easy to enjoy local culture without spending a dime.

For example, the Ron Jon Beach ‘N Boards Fest is an annual event in Cocoa Beach, Florida, hosted by Ron Jon Surf Shop.

It celebrates beach culture with activities like surfing, skateboarding, and paddleboarding, along with live music and food.

The festival attracts top athletes and offers a fun, vibrant atmosphere for spectators and participants alike.

And best of all it’s free to attend as a spectator.

7. Grab a Sweet Treat at SeaDogs Snack Food Stand

For those on a budget, don’t miss the chance to cool off with a delicious ice cream or a refreshing cold drink at the SeaDogs snack food stand.

It’s an affordable and enjoyable way to treat yourself while soaking in the beach atmosphere.

Be sure to try out their frozen chocolate bananas – the combination of chocolate and frozen banana is a match made in beach heaven.

Whether you’re taking a break from the sun or just craving something sweet, SeaDogs offers the perfect solution to beat the heat without breaking the bank.

8. Museum of Dinosaurs

Another great museum to explore is the Museum of Dinosaurs.

This place is full of dinosaur fossils and you can learn so much about it.

Not only do you get to learn about prehistoric times and civilizations, but also learn about the dinosaurs themselves.

You can find everything from King Tutakkomen’s tomb to the fossil bones of a T-rex. 

In addition, they offer a dinosaur store where you can buy souvenirs to take home. 

9. Hang out at the Manatee Sanctuary Park

The Manatee Sanctuary Park has become a place where you can relax, picnic, BBQ, walk your dogs, and enjoy the playground, etc.

Because of its location near Banana River, a section that houses and protects the manatee population, you may spot a manatee.

But of course, there are no guarantees. It is still a sweet spot to picnic at. 

10. Exploration Tower

One of the coolest things you can do while exploring Cocoa Beach is to check out the exploration tower.

Its unique structure and seven floors of exploration include a gift shop and a food place.

Though there is an entrance fee, it is definitely worth checking out.

With the outdoor observation deck, you see cruise ships departing off Port Canaveral or even see a rocket launch!

11. Go Mini Golfing

Mini Golfing has become more popular near beach locations!

And with the popularity of the sport, it has become a fun event for anybody.

There are plenty of nice mini-golfing places to check out near the beach.  

If you google mini-golfing in the area then definitely find some good ones near the cocoa beach area.

12. Ron Jon Surf Shop

This famous Shop is actually located within distance to Cocoa Beach.

They offer everything you could possibly need including swimwear, sunscreen, sunglasses, or any other beach accessory you can think of.

You never know, you may just forget your most important beach accessory when you land.

13. Sea Turtle Preservation Society Turtle Walks

This non-profit organization is making a difference in the world. If you have time to check this place out, it is worth it.

Not only are they making a difference in the survival of sea turtles but also protecting them from extinction. 

During sea turtle nesting season they provide guided walks in May, June, and July where they educate you on nesting areas while you’re so close to sea turtles!

14. Window shop at the outdoor mall called The Avenue Viera

If you do enjoy shopping around and exploring, then I highly recommend the outdoor mall called The Avenue Viera.

Not only can you enjoy the wonderful fresh air, but you can also enjoy restaurants, a movie theater and more.

During Christmas, you take pictures with Santa if you wish.

One more thing about this mall: It is a pet-friendly mall, which means you can bring your dog to walk around.

Though you must follow rules and regulations of making sure you pick up after your dog.

Your dog must be leashed and with current vaccinations at all times. It is a must!

15. Shop the indoor mall called Merritt Square Mall

Another place to get some shopping done is called Merritt Square Mall.

Though it may be a little further than the Cocoa Beach itself, this place offers plenty of things to meet all your shopping needs.

Everything from JcPenny, Dillards, Macy’s, and Sears.

So If you are looking for more of an indoor mall then this is your place to be. 

Other activities in Cocoa Beach Florida

Because Cocoa Beach is like most beaches you can do other outdoorsy activities in the water.

I have seen many people, swimming, kayaking, and even paddleboarding here.

There are a couple of local shops that will rent out the equipment for a day.

Take advantage since some places are reasonably perfect to create some memories. 

1. Brevard Zoo

One of my favorite places to go to is Brevard Zoo.

Though it is a bit further from the beach and you’re looking for things to do, then I suggest Brevard Zoo.

Not only is it a perfect place to enjoy a nice walk there, but you can learn about many species when visiting.

When my sister and I went, we enjoy watching the sea otters run around and saw many different bird species including a large alligator. 

2. Kennedy Space Center

The Kennedy Space Center is a perfect interactive museum that allows you to explore space without actually traveling a million light-years away!

Learn everything from space launches, rockets, and even get a chance to meet an astronaut.

If you plan your day correctly you may even experience a launch day!

It’s amazing to see the Rockets take off!

As you can see there are lots to do in Cocoa Beach.

Whether you are here visiting for one day or a week, it doesn’t really matter.

What I enjoy most about Cocoa Beach is the low-key type of beach it is.

It offers everything from beach, dining, shopping, and anything in between.

So after exploring Orlando Florida spend a day at the beach exploring.

Not only will you get to have fun but you will also enjoy taking yourself or your family there.

There really is a lot to do. 

If you’re looking for other activities outside the Cocoa Beach area then be sure to check out the Kennedy Space Center where you learn about launches and rockets.

They have a very informative museum you can enjoy there. 

If you want to enjoy getting some fresh air while you’re at it, then be sure to check out Brevard Zoo. 

This was one of my favorite things to do while visiting.

I enjoyed seeing the animals and being a tourist here. 

Finally, Cocoa Beach Florida may not have the white sands of Florida, but it is often considered the top 7 magnificent Florida Beaches to visit closest to Orlando.

So if you’re looking for a Florida beach vacation, then definitely plan for Cocoa Beach. It’s tranquil as it is beautiful.
