The ideal time to visit this beach largely depends on your preferences and what you’re looking to experience.

For those seeking warm and sunny beach days, the summer months, from June to August, are the prime time to soak up the sun and enjoy the refreshing ocean waters.

During this period, you can see a mixture of both locals and tourists enjoying the beach.

Throughout the year, Topanga State Beach hosts several events and festivals that attract visitors from near and far.

For example, Heal the Bay is a nonprofit organization that hosts yearly beach cleanups in the Los Angeles area.

In addition, for those visiting during Memorial Day Weekend in the U.S. (which is usually the last Monday of May) the Topanga Days County Fair takes place near this beach.

For three days this festival features live music, a parade, and food.

Getting to Topanga State Beach

This beach is situated at 18700 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, CA 92065.

If you’re coming from the Los Angeles area, Topanga State Beach is located to the north of Los Angeles, but it’s not too far away.

The distance between Los Angeles and Topanga State Beach is approximately around 30 miles.

So it’s not that far!

It is worth mentioning that there are other beaches found closer to the Los Angeles area such as Santa Monica State Beach.

Nevertheless, expect Santa Monica State Beach to be a well-known tourist destination with lots of people!

So, if you’re looking for a more relaxed tranquil destination you can’t go wrong with checking out this place.

To reach Topanga State Beach from Los Angeles, you have several transportation options:

By Car or Ride-Hailing Apps:

If you prefer by car simply use a reliable map service like Google Maps or Apple Maps to get to this destination.

All you do is provide your current location to the final destination: Topanga State Beach.

It’s pretty much the Pacific Coast Highway 101 you’ll be taking.

Going by car is by far the best and easiest option in my opinion!

Unfortunately, unless you are traveling amongst big cities in the U.S. such as New York City, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. to name a few you won’t have many public transportation options.

So it makes it a bit hard to get around.

My sister and I did a road trip this year along the Pacific Coast Highway 101.

We rented a car from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) through

We had an overall great experience and even saved more money here than with my flight attendant benefits!

You can learn more through our post: McWay Falls Big Sur, California: Tips for a Perfect Visit.

Furthermore, if you prefer using ride-hailing apps like Uber or Lyft expect prices to vary depending on the day and time.

Just know you can also use these services here in this area.

By Public Transportation:

For those who are eco-conscious travelers or those who want to avoid the hassle of driving, we have some good news for you!

There is public transportation to Topanga State Beach!

From LAX you must take the Big Blue Bus Route 3 to Santa Monica then Metro Bus 534 to Topanga State Beach.

You’re looking at about a 2-hour destination ride.

You can learn more by mapping it out in Google Maps and checking out Big Blue Bus and Metro websites.

Topanga State Beach Parking and Nearby Hotels

If those are traveling with a car expect to pay at the Topanga State Beach parking lot.

The parking lot is right in front of the beach.

You will need to take a few stairs down to get to the beach, but this is nothing compared to some beaches in San Diego such as Stonesteps Beach or Swami’s Beach which has over 100 steps to get down into!

When my sister and I visited the parking lot costs were as follows:

Monday-Friday: $3 From 6 am-9 am/ $8 From 9 am-6 pm and $3 From 6-8:30 pm

Saturday-Sunday: $15 From 6 am-6 pm and $3 6 pm-8:30 pm

You can pay using cash or a card here for those wondering – just know that no change is given.

Be sure to check the park’s official website or contact them in advance to confirm the current admission fees and any potential parking charges.

Note: For those people with disabilities know that you can park here for free at this lot with the exception of holidays.

It’s also advisable to arrive early to secure a spot, especially during peak seasons.

For those looking to stay here, I personally recommend your best option would be just visiting this place as a day trip and staying somewhere else.

You can pretty much explore this whole beach in a day unless you want to explore Topanga Canyon State Park as well.

This state park offers camping and you can spend all day exploring many of its unique hiking trails.

If you don’t care about seeing the state park know that Topanga Ranch Motel is the only place located across this beach but is currently closed as of 2023.

Your best option for accommodation is staying near the Los Angeles area.
